Why You Should Replace Attic Insulation After Animal Removal

Animals seek shelter year-round, whether they are looking for warmth in the cooler months or protection from the sun during the summer. This search for shelter can often lead these little guys right into your roofing system. While they can be cute, these creatures can wreak havoc on the elements of your roofing system and most likely you will need to replace attic insulation. The most common critter to look out for are:

  • Mice & Rats
  • Squirrels
  • Birds
  • Termites, Spiders, & Other Bugs

Are Animals Living Rent-Free in Your Home?

If any of the above critters are spotted running around your house, it could be your first clue that something has taken up residency in your roof and attic. But don’t be fooled! Not all animals can be seen and just because you can’t spot them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. So, you will need to look for other signs of infestation. We’ll cover how these furry tenants can damage your home and what to do post-eviction!

What should you look for?

  • Animal Nests, which could be compiled of sticks, grass, and leaves
  • Animal Tracks & Waste Droppings
  • Claw Marks or Chewed Pieces
  • Holes in Shingles, Tiles, & Siding
  • Burrows, a common problem found in insulation

Depending on what type of creatures are invading your home, there might be other signs to look for. If you believe you have something living in your roofing system, you might want to call a professional to assess your home and let you know for sure.

INSULATION

To Replace Attic Insulation or To Not Replace? That is the question!

It is critical to do an inspection of the attic and crawlspaces to make sure that there are no animals present in the attic space. If there are none or once you get rid of the critters in the area, it’s time to assess!

If that is the case, you may get away with simply replacing the parts of the insulation where their feces are present. Either way, you need to sterilize and disinfect the attic thoroughly to get rid of the bacteria and pheromones present, which are infamously hard to get rid of. You may also need to deodorize to remove the distinct rodent smell that may have soaked into the rest of the insulation. Rodent feces contain well-documented diseases so be sure to wear an appropriate face mask such as an N-100 rated respirator.

When to Replace Attic Insulation

Unfortunately, in most cases, it is necessary to replace all the attic insulation. This process is not only tedious but hazardous as well. There is the risk of inhaling pathogens, fiberglass, and other airborne particles that can compromise your respiratory system among other possible health issues.

The best strategy when you need to replace attic insulation is to keep the debris and material confined to the attic to protect the rest of your home. This precaution is only possible with professional equipment such as a vacuum to suck out the old insulation directly out of the attic to the outside without running through the house. Do not handle insulation unless you are positive that it is not toxic.

Preventative Measures

When an animal or colony of critters makes their way into your home, attic, and roof, they can cause significant damage. Most of the time, not only will the damage need to be repaired by a professional, but the cost to get rid of the critters can be significant as well. There are a few preventative measures that a homeowner can take to inhibit critters from making their way inside.

  • Trim your trees and bushes so your roof is not accessible for animals that can use them as a ladder to your roof.
  • Clean debris from drains so birds can’t use the materials for nesting
  • Keep food inaccessible by putting your trash cans inside a garage or shed
  • Use specialized screens to close off known holes to discourage animals from finding their way inside
  • Install roof ornaments to scare off critters and animals.
