The changing of the seasons is here, and with it brings consequential storms that may harm your structure. Most of us are caught off-guard when the wind knocks part of our roof or our siding off. Your first natural instinct is to panic, of course.
We have a simple 5 step process to help you after a storm hits your area.

Before the storm strikes, it’s worth noting preparedness procedures to help you be ready. Check out ready.gov for tips on what to do before and during a severe storm.
Step 1: Tend to Any Medical Needs
Foremost, the people and pets affected by the storm come before anything else. If anyone was physically hurt or needs calming down, remedy that situation first. Shock and panic are all natural reactions after a storm. The situation can even cause post-traumatic stress disorder, depending on the situation and individual. Be aware of everyone involved and make sure all are accounted for and safe.
Step 2: Temporary Repairs
Once everyone is out of harm’s way, it’s time to do as much damage control as possible. If there is a hole in your structure, do your best to temporarily patch it up. The goal is to keep the inside from as much water damage as possible. If step #1 is keeping you from doing this (in the hospital), contact someone close to you that is safe that can assess the situation and help.
Step 3: Document the Damage
Take pictures of all the damage you can see after a storm. This is an important step for proof of compensation. You can do this in addition with step #2, if that’s easiest. Be cautious as you’re moving about near damaged structures, as they could be unstable.
Here’s a visual checklist:

- Siding – Walk around and check out all the siding for missing or damaged pieces.
- Appliances – Check out your air conditioning unit, satellite dishes, and other outside appliances that might have damage.
- Roof Damage – Get up on your roof, if it’s safe, and check for missing shingles, holes, dents on vents, and gutter damage.
- Broken Doors & Windows – Inspect all windows and doors to make sure no glass was shattered and all seals are still operational.
- Basement Flooding – Heavy rain can find its way in when you least expect it. After a good rain, it’s a good idea to walk around your basement to make sure the foundation is still in good shape. You’ll know by any standing or dripping water.
- Ceiling Leaks – Go to your top floor (right below the attic) and check for coffee-colored stains on the ceiling. This is a telltale sign that water has worked its way in.
Step 4: Call A Storm Damage Contractor
This step can be combined with step #3. After you document what you assess, call a company to do an assessment. Professional storm damage contractors will know what to look for and might catch things you aren’t able to. They will get up on the roof, and if you are afraid, that’s a good reason to leave it up to them!
Step 5: Call your Insurance Company
You will need to put in a claim depending on how bad the damage is. This step will go hand in hand with step #4, as the homeowner and hired contractor might get different results. If you call your insurance agency first, be sure to let them know you have not hired a company yet. Giving them a quick call gives them a heads up of what to expect and can expedite the process.
