It’s not even Summer, but Mother Nature definitely wants us to know it’s on the way! Many of us have already got our air conditioners running at full blast. Besides using that though, there are other ways to help your AC unit and energy bill.
Try out these tips to keep your house cooler!
We offer these suggestions to keep your house cool without AC.
#1. Keep your Windows Shut and Curtains Drawn
According to the Department of Energy, 76% of the sun’s rays that enter your home turn into heat. Get some sun-blocking curtains or shades to give your rooms the best chance of keeping cool. Shutting the windows during the heat of the day is also preferred. Close those windows when the air is hotter outside than in.
We know, fresh air is nice, but when it’s hot, it’s better to just use a fan. Speaking of fans…
#2. Use Fans to your Advantage
There is a wrong way to use a fan. Make sure all of your ceiling fans are spinning counterclockwise during the warmer months to create a downdraft. This can give you a consistent breeze that will still cool you off even if the air is warmer. If you are trying to cool down a hotter area of the house, point a fan in a cool room to a hot one to create a nice cross breeze. If you are really having a hard time cooling off, try angling a bowl of ice behind a fan. That will really keep your house cooler. Many homes also have an attic fan. If you have an older home, it’s likely you have a house cooling attic fan. Use this to your advantage.
#3. Refrain from Using the Oven
Avoid roasting or baking if you want to keep your house cool. Try grilling out instead! If you must use the oven, wait for the temperature to drop and use exhaust fans to push the warm air out. Pilot lights can also omit some heat, so use sparingly if possible.
#4. Pay Attention to Humidity Levels
Humidity added to the mix will just make you feel hotter and more uncomfortable. Monitor the humidity levels outside and in. Try to keep your house under 60% for the health of your family and house structure. If you are having trouble keeping it down, for instance, in a damp basement, use a dehumidifier.
#5. Insulate Your Doors and Windows
Are your doors and windows really old? It might be time to invest in new ones or use weather stripping. Look for gaps in the sills. Use caulk to cover up holes. Pssst… Avsten Construction offers window installation!
#6. Consider Your Lighting to Keep Your House Cooler
Some older lamps and fixtures can give off a surprising amount of heat. Test lamps and fixtures by putting your hand close to the light bulbs (not too close to burn yourself). Is it unbelievably hot? It might be time to upgrade the lighting. More modern lighting fixtures use compact fluorescent bulbs that don’t give off any heat and can help your house save energy!
#7. Open Windows When It’s Cool
Does the temperature drop at night? Open up the windows and cool down a space fast with fresh air! The breeze will freshen up the house, too. However, be cautious not to allow too much of an increase in the humidity level. Too much humidity inside is not good for your floorboards or belongings.
Ready To Keep Your House Cooler This Summer?
Spring and Summer might be the most welcome time of the year for many, but the heat can be a real burden. Don’t let it ruin your summer. Be sure to dress for warm weather instead of cranking up the air conditioner. Check your attic insulation to make sure your cool air isn’t just going through the roof. Take breaks when working to avoid overexertion. Enjoy the season!
