5 Important Spring Roofing Issues

Warmer weather generally makes us happier. Be smart and first pay attention to some common roofing issues to watch out for this spring. There is beauty in winter, but that notion only lasts so long until we are all begging for spring to arrive! It’s an ideal time for many homeowners to get outside and evaluate their home’s exterior. Being a bit biased on the subject, we strongly encourage you to check out your roof as soon as the weather turns decent!

Here are some common roofing issues we repair:

#1. Moisture Retention & Sagging

When you have had the burden of heavy snow on your roof, it can take a toll. The weight can cause structural problems. On top of that, moisture from melting snow can cause condensation issues underneath. This all leads to sagging, which is pretty obvious to the eye. Be sure to check out places where it’s not as steep or there are older roofing materials.

#2. Gutter & Roofing Issues

Fall leaves and debris from dead branches can clog and damage your gutter systems. It’s likely that they probably have not been checked or cleared over the winter. Clearing them as soon as you’re able is absolutely necessary. Besides clearing them, inspect downspouts and drainage points. Wind and cold temperatures can loosen them. The goal is to get water away from the property. Run your hose up and into the gutter to test the proper water flow. Address any snow and ice damage you identify right away.

#3. Leaks

Snow and ice damage over the winter months can lead to roof leaks discovered during the Spring showers. You might think that it would be obvious if you had a leak, but not always. Go around the house and look for ceiling and wall stains. Don’t forget to check the closets! Last, but not least, take a trip up to the attic. Look for moist places where water might be intruding. You might have to check on a rainy day to get a better idea. Spring will bring more rain and in turn do more damage if it is put off.

#4. Animal Intrusion

Springtime will not only bring warmth and rain, it will also bring critters looking to nest. Attic spaces and dormant chimneys are often prime locations. Look for loose siding, open chimney tops, broken shingles, and loose ventilation. You’ll want to deter animal intrusion as much as possible to avoid a whole lot of damage and agony. If you suspect squirrels running around in your attic, contact an animal removal service and get the damage fixed as soon as possible.

#5. Deteriorating Chimney

Just like with your roof, you must inspect all the other essentials. If you have a chimney, check it out for cracks. Over the winter, the lower temperatures can cause the mortar and bricks to expand. When that process starts and does not get addressed right away the condition can really be expensive to remedy.
